WCB Seeks Comment on Adding Additional Network Security and Firewall Services to the Eligible Services List

The Wireline Competition Bureau released a Public Notice seeking comment on numerous requests that the Commission allow E-rate funds to be used to support advanced or next-generation firewalls and services, as well as other network security services. 

Comments are due February 13, 2023, and reply comments are due March 30, 2023.  All filings should refer to WC Docket No. 13-184. 

The Eligible Services List for FY 2023 is already set so it is highly unlikely any changes would be made for the upcoming funding year. If any changes are made, they would likely not be implemented until FY 2024. 

The Bureau seeks comment on the individual requests that have been filed (see Appendix A of the public notice for links to these filings) and the following specific items:

• Definition of Advanced or Next-Generation Firewalls and Services
• Eligible Equipment and Services and their Costs
• Categorization of Firewall Services and Components
• Cost-Effective Purchases
• Legal Issues
