Senate Voted to Repeal E-Rate Wi-Fi Hotspots Order
On May 8, 2025, the U.S. Senate voted along party lines to repeal the E-Rate Wi-Fi Hotspots Order.
Senator Ted Cruz sponsored the bill claiming it is an effort to protect children from harm from the Internet. The resolution now heads to the House, and if it clears the House and is signed into law, the Hotspot rule would be overturned and, because the resolution was passed under the Congressional Review Act, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would be prohibited from issuing any future rule that is substantially the same. FCC Chairman Brendon Carr and Commissioner Nathan Simington are in support of this action, while Commissioner Anna Gomez was critical of it.
